Annie Chapman nee Smith 1841-1888:
Annie Chapman was murdered on the 8th September 1888 at 29 Hanbury Street, Whitechapel. Cause of death: Violent injuries to throat and abdomen ; by a sharp instrument. Murder against some person or persons unknown.
Annie was born illegitimately in the year of 1841, at Westminster in the County of Middlesex, now part of London, she was baptised Annie Eliza Smith on the 23rd April 1842 at Christ Church, in Albany Street, Camden, in the County of Middlesex. |
Her parents George Smith and Ruth Chapman, were married on the 22nd February 1842 at St. James' Church, in Paddington, Middlesex.
Annie's father George Smith was a private in the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards, and was unavailable for marriage until after the birth of his daughter.
George was born on the 10th April 1819 at Waddington in the County of Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas and Ann, by trade a shoe-maker. George joined the colours, on the 12th December 1834, at the age of 15 years and 8 months, he served with the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards, until 11th April 1837, when he was eighteen, and from the 12th April 1837, for 24 years, 342 days, being discharged on the 19th March 1862 at his own request, his description was:Age: 42 years, 11 months.
Height: 6 feet.
Complexion: Fair.
Eyes: Brown.
Hair: Brown.
Trade: Shoe-maker.
George died in the 1860's.
Her mother Ruth Chapman the daughter of William and Isabella, was born in the year 1818 and baptised on the 24th March 1833 at Herstmonceux in the County of Sussex. Ruth died at the family home 29 Montpelier Place, Knightsbridge, in London, on the 12th January 1893, the family had lived there for over 25 years, and would continual to do so for sometime, Ruth was buried in a paupers' grave in Kensal Green Cemetery, West London.
