Edward Barber V. C. 1893-1915:
Born the 10th June 1893 at 40 Kings Street, Tring in the County of Hertfordshire, he was baptised on the 5th May 1894, the son of William a blacksmith and Sarah Ann of 40 King Street, Tring in Hertfordshire.
The London Gazette: Monday 19th April 1915. No. 15518 Private Edward Barber, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. For most conspicuous bravery on 12th March, 1915, at Neuve Chapelle. He ran speedily in front of the grenade company to which he belonged, and threw bombs on the enemy with such effect that a very great number of them at once surrendered. When the grenade party reached Private Barber they found him quite alone and unsupported, with the enemy surrendering all about him. |
The Parents: William Barber a Blacksmith & fitter, was born at Tring in Hertfordshire in 1860 the son of George a plumber & painter, and Mary. He married Sarah Ann Davis in 1882. She was born the 1st August 1861.
EDWARD had five brothers:
Alfred Barber born 8th September 1883, he joined the Bedford Regiment 4th Battalion, in December 1902, 49 days drill. Joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, 16th January 1903. He was 5ft 3 ¼ inches, 104 pounds, 32+2=34 inch chest, fresh complexion, with light hazel eyes and dark brown hair. He married Florence Violet Downs on the 5th May 1913.

Private Alfred Barber, R.A.M.C., is returning home, having obtained his discharge after serving his full time in the Army. He was called up as a Reserve on the outbreak of war, and has been at the Front ever since. Early in the campaign he was taken prisoner by the Germans, but was afterwards rescued. He was subsequently slightly wounded, but recovered in hospital and returned to duty. It is stated he will resume his occupation as a postman at North Mymms.
He has certainly done his bit.

Mr. Alfred Barber, the highly respected postman, is shortly to rejoin the Army. He has already served his full time, with one year extra on account of the war, as well as in the present contest, in the early days of which he was for a time a prisoner in the hand of the Germans, being released by the Allies before the enemy could remove him to Germany.
Mr. Barber's brother won the Victoria Cross on the Western Front.
His son Alfred Downes Barber aged 28 of the 2nd Battalion The Kings Regiment, was Killed in Action, on the 3rd of January 1945.
Alfred died in 1961.
William Charles Barber : Was born the 8th November or December 1885. He married Ivy Blanche Clements in 1919, she was born in 1892 at Kentish Town, London. William and Ivy moved to Wembley in Middlesex, where he worked on the railways, a son Donald was born on the 2nd September 1921, Ivy died in 1932 and in 1934 William married Caroline Matthews, in 1939 the family are living at 1 Railway Cottages, Wembley.
William died in 1954.
George Barber: Was born the 21st November 1887. He married Alice Maud Biddle on the 17th April 1911, at the Parish Church Tring, in Hertfordshire.
Children: Percy Edward 12th August 1912. Stanley George 22nd October 1913.
Royal Engineers 2017th Anti Aircraft Company April 1917. 5 ft 4 ¼ inches, 137 pounds, with a 34 ½ + 2 ½ = 37 inch chest. Died 1966.
