Towards the end of 1866, the family were lodging at Whippery Lane, Carlisle in the County of Cumberland, with fellow lodger Robert Bonner or Bald, (name reported at the time was Bonner, afterwards he used the name Bald.)
Bonner, a blacksmith/iron-moulder, had seduced the beautiful Mrs. Woodman, and an affair Started, between the both of them. Once Woodman found out about the affair, he moved the family to Wigton in Cumberland and took lodging with Mrs. McWhinney.
Many mouths' and many arguments later. The Four Days' from Hell:
Thomas Woodman four days' from Hell started on Monday the 17th June 1867, when during an argument Catherine moved out taking her daughter, Ellen with her, going straight to Robert Bonner at Whippery Lane in Carlisle.
To say he was devastated would be an understatement, he could not sit still nor eat anything, and tried to hang himself with a scarf.
Tuesday the 18th, Thomas was seen walking around in a daze, and had twice attempted to cut his throat, and once with a rope over the bannisters of the stairs. In the evening Bonner had turned up at Mrs. McWhinney lodging house, looking for Woodman and a bed for the night. Mrs. McWhinney refused to take him in, but Woodman said he could share his bed for the night. During the night, many quarrels were heard between the two men, Bonner was overheard to accuse Woodman of picking his pocket. At one point Bonner struck Woodman over an ear-ring belonging to Woodman's wife, which Bonner put in his pocket.
Wednesday the 19th, Bonner was heard frequently to threaten what he would do to Woodman, and at different times in the day would run into the yard to escape the violence of Bonner.
Thursday the 20th, in the morning Bonner was heard to say that before the day was over, it would be Woodman's end. The police were called during one of Bonner's violent outbursts, the two being separated, and Woodman went for a walk into the country.
Thomas Woodman's body was found hanging from a tree, by Mary Brown, a servant girl, just outside of town. She ran and told James Wilson, a gardener, who lost no time in cutting him down.
The inquest was held on Saturday the 22nd June 1867, at the Railway Hotel, Wigton, before Coroner W. Carrick. The jury returned a verdict. “That he had destroyed himself, while in an unsound state of mind.”
Catherine Woodman and Robert (now using the surname Bald) moved to Durham, where in 1868, Catherine gave birth to a son, Robert in 1868 at Durham, who was baptised on the 3rd October 1869, at St. Cuthbert's in Durham.
